Long before Gatete Photography became a business, photography was how David learned to recognize the beauty and meaning within ordinary moments. David came to America from Rwanda at 14 years old and attended Mount Michael Benedictine High School. During those formative years, he found friendship, belonging, and a family that welcomed him into their lives. Before long, David became the person documenting their birthdays, gatherings, holidays, and everyday moments together.
Between 2012 and 2016, he took more than 40,000 photographs. Seeing how deeply he loved the craft, his family surprised him with his first Canon camera—and what began as curiosity became a lifelong pursuit.
FROM CURIOSITY TO CALLING
Every kind of photography taught David how to notice.
David spent the following years exploring nearly every kind of photography he could find. He photographed landscapes beneath wide-open skies, experimented with astrophotography after dark, studied the smallest details through macro photography, and learned how light could transform products, portraits, and everyday environments. Each genre taught him something different: patience, composition, timing, light, and how to notice details others might overlook.
In 2018, David began accepting paid family sessions. Those sessions grew into portraits, engagements, celebrations, and eventually weddings. Wedding photography brought all of his experience together: the eye of a portrait photographer, the anticipation of a documentary photographer, the precision of a product photographer, and the ability to recognize emotion before it disappeared.

David’s understanding of wedding photography became even more personal after his own wedding. When David and Meg were married, they discovered how vulnerable it can feel to trust someone with the responsibility of documenting one of the most important days of your life. Their experience left them wishing they had felt more seen, understood, and celebrated through their photographs. That disappointment became part of the foundation of Gatete Photography.

Meg is David’s wife, creative partner, and second photographer. Her calm and attentive presence brings another dimension to every wedding. While David documents the central story and directs portraits, Meg watches for the subtle moments happening around it—the proud expression of a parent, a quiet exchange between friends, the movement of a dress, or the reaction unfolding just beyond the couple’s view.
As a husband-and-wife team, David and Meg understand that a wedding is more than a beautiful event. It is the beginning of a marriage, the joining of families, and a gathering of people whose presence may become even more meaningful with time. Together, they create a fuller, more personal record of the day—one that allows couples to remember not only how everything looked, but how it felt.
